Biography

2nd Lieutenant Mewton was the Assistant Group Commander of Group 6, Cornwall. Mewton was the Caretaker of Liskeard Grammar School and used to run the tuck shop. He was remembered as a very kind and popular man and was affectionately known by all the students as Mew. He was also a Cornish Chess Champion

William was originally in Roseland Patrol but was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 9th November 1942 and was an Assistant Group Commander of Group 6 in Cornwall. He stayed in close contact with the Patrol.

Before WW1 he moved to Canada and joined the Mounted Police. He returned for the war and Mewton enlisted in the Royal Navy 10 May 1918 for a period of 12 years. He is recorded as 5 foot 5 inches with dark hair and eyes and a fresh complexion. 

Born at Nancekuke Farm he was the son of William and Emma, he married Florence J Knight in 1928 and they moved to Genna Farm Perranwell Station. They later became school caretaker with Florence as the school cook.
