Operation Gain involved 58 men of the SAS being dropped into the area around Orleans. Its role was to sabotage the rail links running through the area and prevent German supplies passing through. They were also effective in tying down German forces, but were caught in a number of ambushes, with ten men dying including commander Major Fenwick. The remainder linked up with the advancing US Forces in mid August.
