Builder
Initially in St Monance patrol he quickly became Area and Group Commander of Group 1. As a builder he made such a good job of building the St Monance OB that Captain Maxwell asked him to supervise and advise on the building of all the OBs in the area and beyond.
Interviewed in the Evening Telegraph in 1970 he stated; "In my 1938 Hillman car I covered 73,000 miles in 18 months on this supervisory work. From Beauly northwards during this period I must have stayed in every hotel. Though people knew I must have been on special duties no one ever asked me what these were. As all the bases had to be built at night or at weekends I often returned to the hotel in the wee small hours. Typical of the attitude and the hospitality of the people was that of Mr and Mrs McLeod, then proprietors of a hotel at Ardgay. No matter what time I returned Mrs McLeod was always waiting up for me in the lounge to give me a drink which she called 'the horse's neck'. This was deeply appreciated".
Cathcart was stationed at Balmoral in 1944.
