The son of John Mawson and Martha White, he married Joyce Wright in 1944.
Charlie was employed in the family agricultural contracting company. The family thought he was exempt from call up (unlike his brother who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps) due to his agricultural work, though this may have been because of his Auxiliary Units membership.
In 1939 he was an ARP Messenger, part-time.
He was also responsible for winding up the Abbotsbury Church clock, a duty that had been passed down through his family over generations.

Threshing machine & engine driver.
It was only when he died and the family were sorting through his possessions that they discovered papers saying that he had been in Auxiliary Units during the war. He had never mentioned anything about that while alive, respecting his instructions when signing the Official Secrets Act on joining the Patrol.
