A WW1 veteran he enlisted 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment 2 Sept 1914. He is recorded as 5 feet 7 inches tall with a dark complexion, brown eyes and dark hair. He was awarded the 1915 Star, British Medal and Victory Medal along with a Good Conduct Badge in Dec 1916. He was admitted to hospital in April 1916 with "Trench Foot". He was transferred to the Royal Army Service Corps July 1918 and returned home in June 1919.
