He served in the Royal Navy during the First World War. On 6 Sep 1921 he enlisted in Royal Navy for 12 years service. He was Able Seaman 22822, Chatham Division. Awarded Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal April 1944 (eligible for 18 years Service).

He was the Sergeant of Langton Herring Patrol before becoming Assistant Group Commander. He was promoted Second Lieutenant on 20 Feb 1944.
