Private William "Fred" Dare
18 Mar 1926 - 12 Mar 2019
Biography
The son of William and Gwendoline, William Fred Dare and Frederick John Dare were next door neighbours and Wilf White a cousin.
In 2014 Fred Dare still refused to talk in detail about his service in Auxiliary Units.
He had told his son that he was on duty in the Purbeck hills on D Day, 6 Jun 1944, and that it had snowed briefly. During this spell an officer approached and was challenged three times. Fred Dare was about to fire when the officer finally gave the correct answer to the challenge.
