Career
Cookson was recruited alongside Harry Jackson in Newcastle. It is believed he was singled out due to his friendship with the Mitford family, who headed both Scouts and Guides in the area, giving links to already skilled observers. How many were recruited is not known. The Mitford estate was occupied by the army during the war. Owner Bertram Mitford had died in 1939 and his cousin, the Revend Edward Mitford, who inherited the property did not move in until after the war.
