Alec had worked pre-war chauffeur for Sir Foster-Stedman, the agent for Lord Tredegar who lived between Cardiff and Newport. By 1940, he was working for the Northern Aluminium Company as a fitter. He was recruited to Auxiliary Units from the Home Guard. Along with Sergeant Campbell he went to the Isle of Wight around D Day to Patrol in case of a German counterattack against the invasion port. He had a close shave when a V1 Flying Bomb crashed nearby while on patrol.

1939 Chauffeur 1940 Fitter
In 1946, Alec was working as a fitter and moved to Mombasa in Kenya for work managing a farm. He joined the paramilitary Kenya Police as a reserve officer. He returned to Bassaleg and was working in the petrol station into old age.
