Joff Stiles: “It was June 1940 and Guy Steed telephoned me and asked if I wanted to join something a bit different to the Home Guard, of which I was already a member. Lt. George McNicholl, from the London Scottish and wearing a kilt, and Guy Steed came over one Sunday morning. I told them I had already been asked to join a similar unit. McNicholl went mad and said I was to tell him all I knew or I would be arrested. I refused because I had been told not to say something. Eventually, it came out; it was Cecil Lines who had contacted me. McNicholl said that was OK, then. I didn’t see him, McNicholl, again until he came back to The Garth as a Captain.”
