In 1939 Walter was a Special Constable and his wife, Thelma "Molly" (nee Mason) was a First Aider. He left Special Duties and was replaced by Admiral Palmer.
Walter was a noted breeder of Ayrshire cattle and bought a famous flock of Southdown Sheep, he was also Chairman of advisory committee of Chichester Young Farmers.
He died in 1989 and there is a stand alone memorial to him and Thelma (1996) on the South Downs Way at Steyning.
