Verdun was discharged to join His Majesty's Forces 16th April 1943 and joined the Royal Artillery serving as Private 1841107.
Originally from Monmouthshire, in 1939 he was a director and builder in the family building and decorating firm Cumbley & Bros. Ltd. His brother Ronald was tragically killed trying to save a child from a land mine in Scotland in 1941. He married Joyce E M Murrin in Newton Abbot in 1943.
He had an obituary in The Times on 28th January 1999 having died in Guernsey.
