He was also known as Sydney Mouse. Sydney Moss was an antique dealer and art expert from London who moved to Avon Castle in Ringwood during the war working as a manager for a Southampton based company, Montague L Meyers, whose London HQ had been moved / evacuated to Avon Castle. He would later be promoted to Second Lieutenant in July 1944 and full lieutenant in August that year.

A WW1 veteran he enlisted as Private 2845 in 13th London Regiment 2 Sept 1914 and later as 76558 in Royal Defence Corps. Serving in France from 6 March 1915, he received the Victory, British and 1915 Star medals. He suffered frostbite to his feet, a septic thumb, bronchial trouble and spent 28 days in hospital in Surrey with Influenza.
