A WW1 veteran he was Private 1957 Surrey Yeomanry then 207835 Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment. He was recorded as 5 foot 9 inches tall with grey eyes dark hair and a fresh complexion. He served in B.E.F from 4 March 1916 and was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
A large man he was affectionately known as Jumbo.
