Sergeant Bettesworth had served in World War One. We know that his Patrol met at his house on occasion. The dates on his Home Guard certificate suggest he had joined the Local Defence Volunteers (Home Guard) prior to his recruitment to Auxiliary Units later in 1940.
After the war he became a member of the newly reformed Home Guard in the 1950s.

After the war Sergeant Bettesworth applied for and received his Defence Medal, which he wore alongside his World War 1 medals. This was unusual as most Auxiliers understood they were not allowed to apply for the medal.
He also retained his copies of the 1938 Calendar and the Countrymans Diary. The former contains additional notes made by Lieutenant Peterson.
