Robert was promoted to Lieutenant 1st February 1941.
A First World War veteran he served from 1 Feb 1915 to 1 March 1919 and is recorded as 5 foot 8 inches. He spent a month in hospital in April 1918 due to a gun shot wound to the back, over the right kidney, in France. He never returned to the front. He was firstly in 24th Service Battalion Royal Fusiliers and later Corporal 783426 in 29 (City of London) Battalion London Regiment.
He married Lilian M Key in 1928.
