Richard was one of 6 sons of Robert Martin Holland and Eleanor (nee Martin) the family name is recorded as Holland in 1911 when they are living at 20 Elvaston Place, South Kensington and Robert is a Banker. Robert took the name of Martin in addition to that of Holland by Royal licence in 1917 after the death of his uncle Sir Richard B Martin. Overbury Court then became the country residence of the family.
Richard married Anne Diana F A Ward (nee Capel) in 1959 but the couple divorced in 1965 and he remarried Diana (Didi) Eveline Montague Cameron (née Battye), the divorced wife of former SAS officer ARRP Cameron, in 1966.

Estate manager
Holland-Martin left the Patrol due to ill health in 1942 and was replaced by Basil Tadman as Patrol Sergeant. Many Auxiliers remembered him having a role in recruiting and training. He later moved to South Africa.
The Patrol members all worked on the family estate, Overbury Court.
