The son of John and Cora, he was the brother of Auxilier Joshua Downing. East Barton Farm was the family home. Richard married Orpah Dore (15 years his senior) at Bexhill on Sea, Sussex in 1926.

“Dick” Downing was an expert in explosives. He had been an engineer with Leyland trucks and definitely knew all about explosives which all the Patrol benefited from.
