AA Motor mechanic
A letter refusing his enrolment in HM Forces as he was in a reserved occupation, shows that Dick tried to enlist in the Army in Dec 1939. He enrolled in the Colyton Home Guard 26 June 1940 and was transferred to Auxiliary Units 28 Nov 1942. Shown is a letter received from Lieutenant Howes detailing him joining Stafford Common Patrol under Sergeant Bastone.
Dick Iles joined the AA in the 1930s. He was a bicycle patrolman in Torbay, his beat ranging from Teignmouth to Kingsteignton. After leaving the AA he returned to Colyton and worked for Trevett's Garage in Seaton for over 40 years. He was a noted craftsman especially using the BrightRay welding system.
Richard married Dora Pyle in 1943.
