Born at Kington Magna. The sons of Police Constable Frank Barnes and his wife Louisa. Richard Dennis and William were brothers. On leaving school he was apprenticed to Messrs. Loft and Walne's foundry in Dorchester.
His birth is recorded as Richard Dennis but his death and memorial inscription record him as Dennis Richard. It also appears there was an error recording his date of birth as the nominal role has his year of birth as 1920 when he was actually born in 1925.
