He joined the Royal Yeomanry 16 Jan 1990 where he is recorded as 5ft 11 inches tall with brown hair and eyes and a dark complexion. He served in South Africa and was discharged after 18 months. 29 Jan 1915 he was admitted to the Indian Army Reserve of Officers as a Second Lieutenant. He married Sybil Boyson in May 1916 in Vizianagram, Madras, India.
