Reg joined the Local Defence Volunteers as soon as it was launched but his son remembers that he quickly stopped being involved in parades with the newly named Home Guard. 

"He said little or nothing of what he was doing but I subsequently learned that he was part of another Group who had an underground base somewhere on Haldon. He did have a revolver that he kept at home (I was aware of no ammunition) and I seem to remember a dagger or bayonet".

Reg was a railwayman along side his neighbour Auxilier Ernest Mummery.

He was awarded the Defence Medal at stand down.

The son of William Scott McClaughlin who was a boatman and his wife Ada, Reg in later life he operated the safety boat for Starcross Yacht Club.
