Group Commander of Group "Hop" from 10th November 1941, he resigned his commission for medical reasons 1st November 1943. In a letter concerning the re-arrangement of Patrols dated 15 Oct 1943, his resignation, due to medical reasons, was accepted "with extreme regret". It is noted he resigns from "the operational side of Auxiliary Units", stating this, and with his Royal Signals background, he may have also been involved in the Special Duties Branch. In another letter dated 1 Nov 1943 it requests the return of his uniform "as the Special Duty people work in civilian clothes".

Known as Rex, he was an Royal Corps of Signals Lieutenant veteran from World War One where he served in France. He was wounded in France 6 May 1915.

Having trained in Cambourne Mining School in Cornwall before and after WW1, he worked as an engineer the Brazilian silver mines where everyone wore a six-shooter. He married Gladys Myio Johnstone in Rio de Janeiro in 1921 and they often travelled back to England with their daughter Olive.

His date of birth is recorded as 12 Aug on the nominal roll but 13th on the 1939 Register.
