In 1954, he went to court as a member of the Whippingham Parochial Council and Churchwarden for St Mildred’s, to unsuccessfully fight the merger of the benefice with the more East Cowes.
As Chair of the Isle of Wight Agricultural Executive Committee he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 1967.
