The son of Charles and Beatrice, he married Lottie Hodge in 1926.

Granite polisher
Sergeant Don Welch worked for Lieutenant Alec McLeod as a granite polisher in Palestine quarry's workshop. As with some Auxiliers, Don was called up by the Army at some stage only to be returned home once his role was realised.
Sergeant Welch was provided with various training manuals including “The Countryman's Diary”, “A Guide to the Identification of German Units” and “More Pictures of the German Army”. Don's son, Ken Welch was later recruited to the Patrol by his father. Lottie, the wife of Don and mother of Ken was unaware of their intended roles assuming they were in the regular Home Guard.
Written at the side of his name on the Nominal Roll is noted Documents to War Office 1st May 1946.
