Born in Argentina he was the husband of Mrs Gladys Traill, nee Lace, and brother-in-law of fellow Ottery St Mary GP, Dr Frank Sidebotham. Both were schooled at Charterhouse School, Surrey and trained together at Guys Hospital, London. In 1939 he was in St Johns Ambulance and a ARP Warden.
A WW1 veteran he was Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, first serving in Mesopotamia in June 1917, he was awarded the British and Victory Medals. Ralph and Frank were torpedoed in the same troopship on the way to Mesopotamia. He relinquished his commission in 1920 and retained the rank of Captain.
