On 12 Sept 1914 he joined the Army, later becoming airman 409128 in the Royal Air Force in 1918. He lied about his age to claim he was 19 to sign on.
In 1924 he married Winifred Lillian Davis
From 1932 he was General Manager of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Employers Mutual Indemnity Society. Prior to that he had worked for the Midland Employers Mutual Assurance Limited. He was closely involved in the development of insurance for the men in the South Wales coal industry before the war. The office was at Dominions House, Queen Street, Cardiff and the phone number, 5216, appears in the ES Sadler's papers alongside his home number.
