Left to join Royal Marines. He was posted to Portsmouth to be attached to the Headquarters of General Eisenhower. He travelled to Normandy with an advance party for Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. Later, in Paris, when it was liberated he set up a Headquarters at Versailles. Present at the funeral of Admiral Ramsey in 1945 he was finally demobbed from Minden in Germany in 1946.
