Auxiliers Retter, Pyle, Garnsworthy and Haslam were all near neighbours at Hillside, Burrow. A keen footballer he was involved with Newton Poppleford Amateur Football Club.
The son of Albert Retter he was brought up by his widowed mother Clarissa, Percy married Vera Crutchett in 1939.
