Norman Newton had been in the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. He served as a Rigger from 1 Dec 1917 to 13 Dec 1922 having transferred from the Army. He is recorded as 5ft 3 inches tall with brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion. It appears he was regularly charged with being absent without leave.
