Known as Jimmy Richards, he was a Royal Engineers Sapper posted at the Garth in Kent for some time according to John McKie, who helped build the Airship Hole OB.
In Jul 1942 he ceased Regular Army duties and returned home. He subsequently became involved in the Home Guard part of Auxiliary Units.
Norman became Sergeant of Dinas Powys Patrol and was promoted to Assistant Group Commander of Glamorganshire Group 4a with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
