Jim Slightam was a young lad during the war. At 14 he became a telegram boy for the Post Office at Burley. He sometimes delivered to the RAF airfields at Holmsley South and Winkton. His uniform and Post Office bicycle gave him cover to pass messages between his father and uncle, both of whom were in Auxiliary Units. He told colleagues about this in later life. It is unclear whether this was an informal arrangement within the family, or if he was formally a member of Auxiliary Units Special Duties, who are known to have utilised teenage couriers in other parts of the country. The Brockenhurst Patrol's Operational Base and the Special Duties transmitter at Setley were located quite close to each other, so the journey from Burley would be to very similar locations.
He was also an Air Cadet during the war. He trained as a Post Office Engineer starting as an apprentice in 1945 and working at Bournemouth later in life. He married Iris E Pelly in 1952
