Leslie collapsed and died while playing a football match between Danby and Whitby Royal Air Force Association. The game was being watched by his 13 year old son, Michael. An urgent message was sent to the Doctor at Hinderwell over 10 miles away while the Rev. A.H. Beardsley and two of the Royal Air Force performed artificial respiration for over half an hour.
