His niece commented; "I chanced on your website by accident and was interested that I was able to confirm that my Uncle, Leslie Robert Thompson, had been a member of an Auxiliary Unit (Cowes West Patrol - Northwood.) He never spoke about his wartime activities and it was only after he died and I found a calendar for 1937 with instructions for throwing grenades and making bombs that I suspected that he might have been a member of Churchill's hidden army. During the war he was working making aircraft parts at a factory in Cowes (maybe Saunders Roe?). Perhaps this was the reason that he was not called up into the services. He was very handsome and an accomplished drummer. His parents owned a public house near the chain ferry at West Cowes. He lived at Thornhill, The Avenue, Freshwater".
In 1939 the family are living at 2 Weston Terrace, Broadway, Totland. Leslie is recorded as being a general motor engineer now working in aircraft machine. Roseline is a Greengrocer and shopkeeper.
