Dr Leonard Boys was senior partner in the Woodhall Spa medical practice with Dr Armour. The two doctors operated the wireless between them.
Dr Boys had been the honorary doctor to the Spa in Woodhall and wrote in the medical press on the benefits of the waters. In 1933 he was appointed Officer of the Order of St John.
His wife, Amelie J B Lukach, known as Lilly, was half Austrian and his marriage in Mar 1914 shortly before the First World War is of note. He served in the RAMC from 1914 in France and Italy, until wounded in 1918, while attached to the Warwickshire Regiment. His son grew up speaking German fluently and was in Austria visiting relatives when the Second World War broke out. He was given a letter to return to the Foreign Office in London. He smuggled it back in the sole of his shoe, a nerve wracking journey with the Gestapo travelling on the same train. Possibly this suggests the family had Secret Service links that prompted Dr Boys involvement in the Special Duties Branch. Of course in the event of a German occupation the family links might have been a great advantage for a spy and reduced any suspicions. His wife trained as an ASRP gas instructor before the war and organised Women's Voluntary Service volunteers during the war and was awarded an MBE in 1941 for this service.
After the war, he retired and moved to Aldeburgh, living a short distance from his son. He had apparently fallen in love with Aldeburgh aged 11, as the result of a game of golf played there.
