Leonard was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 1st February 1941, to Lieutenant 9th November 1942 and to Captain 17th August 1944. He was also awarded the Defence Medal at stand down. In the 1950s he still had boxes of detonators and trip wires that he used to deter thieves from his chicken run. 

Born in New Buckby, Northamptonshire to Henry and Emily (nee Glover). He moved to America in 1905 and had been a naturalised American from 1911 having served in the US Navy and Coastguard. He married Edith Mantle in New York in 1914. A WW1 veteran he served in Army Service Corps from Sept 1915. He moved into Rhode House, Colyford in 1923.
