He married Margaret Mounsdon in 1935. Haimes was interred in Butleigh Churchyard having retired 2 years previously from his job of 40 years for Somerset County Council Highway Division. He had lived in Butleigh Wootton for over 40 years. His obituary in 1972 mentions his role in forming Auxiliary Units and then his service with the Pioneer Corps in Holland and Germany.

Highways foreman SCC
He worked as a highways foreman for Somerset County Council and was honorary secretary for the local British Legion. Keenly interested in local village affairs he was the local representative on the West Somerset Co-operative Committee and represented West Somerset on the Central Committee. Leonard was the son-in-law of Reginald Mounsdon who was the head gardener to Robert Neville-Grenville, owner of the land where the OB was situated.
Leonard joined the Royal Artillery Territorial Force aged 16 in 1921 on joining his occupation is recorded as a blacksmiths helper. He left to enlist in the Somerset Light Infantry in October 1922 serving for 12 years with 3 years in Egypt.
On 15 Dec 1945 the Wells Group of Somerset Auxiliers had a stand down meal at the Bekynton Cafe in Wells. The men are listed in their Patrols. Haimes has a star next to his name which denotes he was in Auxiliary Units from its formation.
