Biography

Born in London to Charles and Lily, the family moved to Cornwall when Laurie was a baby. Lily and Charlie honeymooned in Perranporth, in a cottage along Bolenna Lane. Charlie was working as a merchant seaman. As soon as Laurie was born they moved back to Perranporth and briefly lived in Liskey Hill Crescent before moving to Treleigh, Perrancoombe. During this time Charlie was still working on the ships until he broke his leg slipping on the rocks at Droskyn. Charlie never went back to sea after that.  It effected Laurie very badly as he had to give up school and get a job to help pay the bills, that made them start taking in lodgers during the war.

Once his leg was healed Charlie worked at the ammunitions factory, where the OB was, at Cligga, which had to move to Cheltenham later during the war. Before the end of the war the rent on Beach Villa was increased which meant it was too expensive and they had to find somewhere else to live. Laragh had been occupied by the British soldiers and as soon as they moved out, Charlie and Lily moved in. The American soldiers were billeted in Belfori and Lily used to cook for them and in return they provided her with items that she could not get due to rationing.

Laurie married Dorothy "Lilian" Daws (adopted by Colvill Greet) in 1947.

At the end of the war Charlie was a storeman and Lily started taking guests for 'bed breakfast and evening meal' as Perranporth had started to become a popular tourist destination; there was even a special train direct from Paddington to Perranporth during the summer months.  She continued doing this until she died. Charles then moved to Penmarrin at Bolingey, which had been Lillian and Laurie's home.  Laurie then had to buy Laragh from his father.

Laurie worked for the Council at Truro County Court from 1948, becoming chief clerk in 1963 before retiring in 1983. He was the clerk for the Parish Council for 20 years and a Parish Councillor for 4. At one time he was Captain of the local golf and bowling clubs, a member of the Ramblers Association and a garden trustee.
