The son of Edwin and Maude, he married Olive Gutterie in 1927 in South Beddington, Surrey. Early in his working career he worked for Dorman, Long & Co as a bridge engineer in Egypt and later building Dorman's Bridge in Auckland, New Zealand.
Later he was agent and chief engineer of Associated Bridge Builders and spent 4 years on site building the Severn Bridge.
