Kitty Hills (nee Hutchinson) was married in 1931 to Captain John Hills who designed the initial Special Duties wireless sets and helped set up the organisation. He recruited his wife to be one of the earliest operators, most likely early in 1941. When first recruited they were not commissioned, until it was realised that under ATS rules they could not be left to operate the stations. These rules did not apply to Officers!
