The son of Henry and Rhoda, he married Violet Ede in 1935.
Known as Joe he served in the Middle East in WW1 in Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry as Private 2599 then 200786. He recalled he was one of the first troops to enter Jerusalem. He was awarded the Victory and British medals.
Known as a poacher, Mrs Nichols, from the Jubilee Inn asked him for some rabbits. He returned having poached them from her own field and promptly sold them back to her.
