Around D Day he lead the East Riding detachment of men south to the Isle of Wight where they assisted guarding important sites.

Group Commander of Group 8 East Ridings of Yorkshire. In all Auxiliary Units records he is recorded as S. Holmes rather than his first name John.
He was among a number of men attending a reunion at The Beverley Arms in 1946 for former Auxiliers.
Holmes is known to have given an interview to The Yorkshire Evening Post in 1968 detailing his Auxiliary Units work.
