Born is Liskeard he was an enthusiastic sportsman having gained his College colours in both cricket and football. He played professional football for Bedford Town while he was the Headmaster for Biggleswade (Bedfordshire) Boys School aged only 22. He married Mabel Crouch in 1934. He returned to Cornwall to become the Head of the village school at Duloe then Saltash Secondary Modern School where he stayed for 25 years, retiring in 1967. He was later a Mayor of Saltash in the 1950s and a later Justice of the Peace, President of the Rotary Club and Chairman of the planning committee.
In 1939 he was an ARP Warden.
