He was a WW1 veteran, serving as R/1066 Able Bodied Seaman John Heritage, Royal Navy Volunteer reserve. He was injured in the arm during WW1, having a shrapnel wound in his arm. During his recovery he was in hospital at Longleat House, which became a hospital during WW1.
He was awarded the Victory medal & British War medal.
