Known as Frank he was an ARP Warden in 1939.

Mrs Betty Montgomery (widow of Frank Montgomery) spoke to The Imperial War Museum in 1996: "When Frank disappeared during the night or at weekends I didn’t know where he was. I had a telephone number in case of an emergency. I knew he was not involved with the local Home Guard. I did not ask him anything as I knew he would not tell me anything. I accepted this. It was a completely different world to Scotland.

One of our rooms was filled with ammunition, grenades and phosphorous bombs. The windows were sealed up. Again, I didn’t know until after the war. (In 1997 the Army sent in a bomb disposal unit to collect them.)

If he got wind of the invasion coming, the family was to be evacuated to Scotland. We had some money hidden in case we needed to leave quickly. We were married in 1943 and the group sent us a telegram. David Lampe interviewed my husband, but I still didn’t know what it was all about.

He died in April 1980 and he never told me anything after the war nor did he write anything down. They were all very good at keeping quiet. After Frank died I sold the farm to Harry Twyman".

He appears to have been in trouble a few times for careless driving.

The Frank Montgomery playing field in Wickhambreaux was opened in his memory in 1985.
