Lieutenant Graves trained in explosives and practised blowing up trees for Miss Hudson at Pett Street, her brother was the Minister for Agriculture, and in recognition of the help in getting rid of the trees she sent – by the school taxi – a carton of cream each day for his daughter Pamela as she had a ‘shadow’ on her lung and it was thought this would build her up!
"I went up to Coleshill by train from Ashford and when I was on the way back home I was in London standing on the station when two MPs searched me. They found I was carrying a Smith & Wesson, some electrical wire and a few booby-trap materials. They asked me who I was and I said I was in the Home Guard. Finally I gave them a 'special' phone number and they were told to let me go"
