John worked as a fireman on the footplate of a steam engine. He joined the Somerset Police after the war. The son of Edgar and Gladys, John married Vera Chamberlain in 1947.

Railway worker
The nominal roll records his year of birth as born 1924. He joined Auxiliary Units by being recruited by Sergeant Percy Reed he had never joined the Home Guard originally. He was posted to 10th Battalion Gloucester Home Guard 13th July 1944. He was sent to Bristol to work on the railways. There he joined the regular Home Guard.
On 15 Dec 1945 the Wells Group of Somerset Auxiliers had a stand down meal at the Bekynton Cafe in Wells. The men are listed in their Patrols. John is listed as a former member.
