James Lawson Low

Lieutenant James Lawson Low, OBE
28 Sep 1881 - 30 Jan 1951
Biography

Major Low was a native of Kirriemuir. He married Jessie Stenhouse in Edinburgh in 1910 and they had 6 children in 13 years. He graduated M.A. at Edinburgh University and taught at Gillespie School before moving north to Kininmonth. He was afterwards at Fraserburgh before going to Old Deer in 1919.  He retired in 1945 and went to live in New Pitsligo.

He was well know to ex-servicemen as their officer in the 5th Gordon Highlanders during the 1914-1918 war. He took an active part, and kindly interest in the life of the community and in the welfare work for young people. He was a military man and of the old school - a strict disciplinarian and methodical to a degree - but he was also gifted with a keen sense of humour. He was co-founder of the British Legion branch at New Pitsligo and guided it's affairs as Chairman until his death.

He was awarded the O.B.E. for his military and public services and the territorial decoration for his work in connection with that branch of the services in 1914.
