He changed his name by deed poll from James Irwin to Irwin James in 1925. Known as I.J he kept poultry and rabbits. In 1921 he was an agricultural student at Seale Hayne College near Newton Abbot where he obtained the National Diploma in Agriculture, the only student from the College to pass that year. He was living in Saltash, Cornwall and had been granted a reduced fee reserved for Cornish students.
The son of James and Mary (nee Smith), he married Edith Oliver in 1954 and he had cousins who were Auxiliers in Brixham, Devon.
