Bert lied about his age to be able to join Auxiliary Units. While serving he passed his driving test and various exams. When he was called up for regular service in the Army there was no record of this and he had to take them all again.
He recalled he had a Tommy gun and a Winchester rifle with telescopic sight along with a revolver and dagger some of which was stored in his wardrobe at home.
